Managers and coordinators often feel the need for someone outside the organisation with the necessary skills and experience to help them tackle particular issues, support them in developing practices and procedures, and consequently provide relevant information and guidance as they seek to move things forward.
The involvement of the mentor may only be for a short while or it could involve regular meetings over an agreed period of time. However, the mentee is always the one in control of the situation and must never become over-dependant on the mentor. The relationship exists to benefit the organisation and will last as long as necessary, and no longer.
The meetings would be organised to suit the needs of the mentee, and I would provide a report on each meeting, which would include an action plan.
This form of support is an empowering one that should leave the person mentored and their organisation in a better position as a result.
